Memories & Music

It’s crazy how one song can bring back so many memories.

I remember the day like it was yesterday. I was on my way to my high school graduation and I just got my new Dave Matthew’s Band CD in the mail. It literally came in the mail minutes before I was leaving. (Sidenote: I’m mildly obsessed with Dave Matthews) And anyways, it was already a really emotional day for me. But I still remember driving by myself to meet my 7 best friends for a picture-taking session before the graduation ceremony. I listened to Dave’s new CD on the way there and literally had chills the whole car ride. There’s something about that car ride that I’ll never forget.

Now whenever I listen back to one of the songs that I had on repeat for most of the drive, I’m brought back to that moment. And it’s hard not to get emotional because it reminds me so much of starting a new chapter in my life and how far I’ve even come since that day.

Three years later, I still remember that drive, that song, and the way it made me feel. And I never want to let go of that memory.

Advice Before College

Before leaving for college in 2009, I received a lot of information from family, friends, and acquaintances about what to expect in college. I always listened to what everyone told me but you cannot fully put it into perspective until you are actually experiencing it. Now, approaching my last few weeks of Junior year, I can share some advice that I think all incoming freshman should know!

1. It will go fast—cherish the moments. People always told me that college will “fly by” and I would think to myself “but it’s a whole 4 years!?” Trust me, it flies by. It is SO hard to believe that I am almost a senior and that I will be in the real world so soon. The best advice I can give is to cherish each day while you are at school; make it memorable and have fun. These are the days that you will never be able to get back, yet you will look back on this part of your life and reminisce about all the good and the bad. Make it count!

2. Get Involved. One of the best decisions I’ve made in college is joining an independent social group. I have made lifelong friends from this group and I think it is super important to get involved around campus because you will meet lots of new friends AND can get involved around the community and do something rewarding. Whether it be a sorority, fraternity, club, or council—it is all beneficial.

3. Start a new beginning. Many college freshmen are nervous, which is totally normal, and I can vogue for the fact that many freshman go home on weekends when they first get to school. Being on campus however (especially on weekends) helps you meet people and make the transition a little smoother. Don’t forget your life back home, but try to make a new one at college as well. It’s all about growing up and learning who you are!

Internship Advice

To many, searching for the perfect internship is pretty stressful. I have been searching since last year and I know the process can be nerve-wracking and time consuming but I have definitely learned things along the way! Here is some friendly advice on how to deal with the internship process:

1. Apply to as many places as possible: It is really important to apply to everything and anything that you find interesting! It is great to get your name out there and if something does not work, most companies will keep your resume on file for future references. It is also easy to apply to one or two internships a day to make it less time consuming!

2. Do not give up hope: You may go months without hearing from an employer, or you may not even hear back anything at all. Some employers get a lot of applications and it can be hard to get in contact with everyone. The main thing to remember is you can’t lose hope! Some opportunities do not work out and that is okay, it just means that there is something better for you down the road!

3. Communication is key: Make sure to keep great contact with any employer! After an interview, make sure to e-mail them or write them and thank them for the time they gave you and let them know that you are very interested and will look forward to hear back from them.

4. Find something you want to do: It will be very beneficial to try to get an internship in a field of work that you are very interested about. If you have wanted to go into Marketing for forever, first it is important to get a marketing internship so you know exactly what it will be like to pursue it as a full time career! It is always important to do something you love doing!
